Brian Shenstone and Bob Orr Win Cal 25 Nationals

Draco, a Detroit entry co-owned by Brian Shenstone and Bob Orr, put forth a terrific performance enroute to capturing the Cal 25 National Championship during the 41st annual Annapolis Race Week.

Orr, a 32-year veteran of the class, steered Draco to victory in six of seven races in totaling a low score of seven points - seven better than second-place Upchuck, co-owned by Mike and Jimmy Praley of Annapolis.

"We have a group of guys that have been together for many years and that makes all the difference," Orr said. "The competition here this weekend was awesome, particularly from Jimmy Praley and his team. We had to stay on top of our game the whole way."

It was the third national title in the last four years for Draco, which will defend its crown next year in Port Huron, Mich. Jimmy Praley, a former Tufts sailor and newcomer to the class, also plans to compete in next year's nationals after making a strong debut. With the younger Praley on the helm, Upchuck won Race 2 and placed second in three others.

"The Draco guys are very, very good. We pushed as hard as we could, but unfortunately we just didn't have the speed or experience to beat them," Jimmy Praley said. "Our crew work was outstanding all weekend. I'm more than pleased with how we got around the course."

Solid winds allowed organizers with the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association to conduct two races yesterday and brought a close to one of the more successful Annapolis Race Week's in recent years. The regatta was plagued with poor wind in 2005 and 2006, but every class completed at least five races this year.

One of the more impressive performances came in PHRF A0, where skipper Rod Jabin steered his Farr 40 Ramrod to five straight bullets. America's Cup tactician Gavin Brady made a guest appearance aboard Ramrod on Friday while Ray Wulff called tactics yesterday.

Perhaps the stiffest competition came in PHRF A2 as a pair of Annapolis sailing legends squared off. Charlie Scott posted a pair of bullets on Saturday then hung on to edge John White by one point.

Fleet 4, comprised of the Etchells and Melges 24s, only competed on Saturday and Sunday and the result was a four-race series for both classes. Light and fickle winds made it tough on the four race committees on Sunday and allowed for just one race for most classes, none for others.

Allan Terhune completed a clean sweep of the Etchells class, winning all four races to take the regatta in resounding fashion. Katie Terhune worked the bow for her husband while Jay Werner did the middle. Terhune, who was competing in only his second Etchells regatta, qualified for the 2008 Worlds as a result of the victory.

Bill Carleton had to fight back a strong bid by Byron Marchant in order to repeat as Melges 24 champion.

"We started a little sluggish in the first race, but we gradually picked it up, found our gear and started hitting the shifts," said Carleton, who had high praise for the performance of his crew Bill Blank (bow), Andy Clemenko (spinnaker) and Tim Borland (jib). In a bit of irony, Blank is a co-owner of Marchant's boat.
