REMINDER...

Mackinac Race Seminar
Wednesday - April 9th - 7pm
at Bayview Yacht Club

Mark your calendar. The BYC Mackinac Race Seminar is coming up on April 9th. This Seminar is for all participants in the Mackinac Race. We will be presenting the new and improved Safety Regulations and Required Equipment. The seminar will also cover the Notice of Race, the Cruising Division Rules, and how to register for the race.

We will have representatives from the local chandleries and sail makers present to  assist you in obtaining any equipment that you may need to comply with the new regulations. We have told them to sharpen their pricing pencils so this would be a good opportunity to shop for anything that you might need.

The seminar also includes a presentation on what the average cost would be to participate in a BYC Mackinac Race for a boat owner that has never entered the race before.

I hope to see all of you down at Bayview on the 9th.

John C. Burke
2008 BYC Mackinac Race Chairman

Inspection Committee Announcement

The 2008 Bayview Mackinac Race Committee strongly recommends first time skippers in Mackinac Race have their vessel inspected prior to the race. Arrangements for this courtesy inspection should be made with Charlie Elmer, our Mackinac Race Inspection Chairman at Charles.F.Elmer@faa.gov.

Inspections may be done locally with advanced notification, or in the Black River upon delivery and prior to race day.

This courtesy inspection is available to all skippers as well, and is practical reassurance particularly for experienced skippers that are entering with a new or different vessel.

This inspection does not exempt the participant from the random inspection and full compliance at the finish of the race.

Bayview to hold Mackinace Race Seminar and NOR Amendment

Bayview Yacht Club will be holding a race preparation seminar on Wednesday, April 9th at 7pm. All participants and potential participants are invited to come. The seminar will cover the Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions, Safety Regulations, Equipment Requirements, Cruising Division Rules, and how to enter the race online. We have invited local sailmakers and chandleries to help in assisting the participants equip their boats for the race. The seminar is free and we would strongly urge you to attend.

The notice of race has been amended concerning the Cruising Division allow boats with a PHRF of 60 or higher (slower) to compete in the division. This was done to allow larger cruising boats to participate in the race.

Mackinac Safety Regulations

We are pleased to announce that the safety regulations for the 2008 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac and the 2008 Bayview Yacht Club's Bayview Mackinac Race have been completed and are available on-line at each race web-site.

Beginning in the early fall, both of our clubs began working together to develop a single set of safety regulations for both Mackinac Races.  This effort was successful.  This year, both Races will utilize the Mackinac Safety Regulations.  In virtually all cases, safety requirements for both Races are identical.  There are two major exceptions.  First, each Race requires that boats carry a slightly different set of paper charts.  Second, all boats racing in the Bayview race will be required to carry a life raft, while boats racing in the Chicago race may carry either a life raft or a GPS-enabled EPIRB.

We strongly encourage all sailors to review the Mackinac Safety Regulations as soon as possible, and to contact us with any questions or concerns.  Bear in mind that the Mackinac Safety Regulations represent minimum requirements.  The safety of a boat and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the Person-In-Charge.  If a Person-In-Charge believes that they should carry a piece of safety equipment not required by the MSR, they can and should do so.

Sail safe.  We look forward to seeing you on Mackinac Island this year!

Regards,

Charlie Elmer

DETROIT - Bayview Yacht Club has announced it has issued formal letters of invitation to sailors from Michigan, Chicago and around the country to participate in the 84th consecutive running of the BYC Port Huron to Mackinac Race on July 12, 2008.

"This is a world class sailboat racing event that is steeped in decades of sportsmanship and family tradition and the lore of the Great Lakes," said John C. Burke, Chairman of the BYC 2008 Mackinac Race. "We worked with the Chicago Yacht Club during the past months to bring the safety regulations for both Mackinac races into as much parity as possible and to make registrations faster this year."

"This is a milestone year and we expect a full fleet of sailboats to participate in this classic regatta," Burke added. While the race is by invitation, interested parties may contact Bayview to inquire about eligibility.

The web address to the Bayview Mackinac Race registration page is www.byc.com/mack/register. If you have any questions please e-mail us at mackinac@byc.com or call Bayview Yacht Club 313-822-1853 and ask for Kerrie Barno, Assistant Manager.

In 2007, Bayview hosted some 250 yachts for the Port Huron to Mackinac Race whose title sponsor was Chrysler Jeep Superstores. The yacht "Carinthia" was the overall winner of the race, finishing at 8:54 a.m. Monday. The  40-foot J-120 sail boat owned by Frank Kern of Grosse Pointe and its crew of nine won on corrected time of 47 hours and actual elapsed time of 43 hours and 14 minutes after a breezy 12-knot start under sun-filled skies Saturday in Port Huron.

From its traditional start in Lake Huron the sail boats will head due North on a single course toward a National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather buoy located about 43 miles Northeast of Alpena, Michigan. The buoy, anchored in 462-feet of water, serves as the "mark" where skippers turn to head for the finish line at Mackinac Island and complete the 252-mile course. BYC in 2007 made the fourth course change in its history, consolidating the "shore course" and Southampton in favor of a single course for all sailboats.

"This is recognized as one of the most challenging and exciting sailboat races in the world on one of the most unpredictable bodies of water in the world," said Race Chairman Burke.  He added that Chicago to Mackinac race will follow the Bayview race by one week July 19.

Bayview Yacht Club, founded in 1915, is widely regarded as one of the premier sailing clubs in North America. The private club is located on the Detroit River near the mouth of Lake St. Clair and has more than 1,000 members.
